Today crews could be seen boarding up the main entrance to the Fred Meyer store at 8530 Evergreen Way in Everett, Washington. A simple sign taped to the grocery entrance advised the location was officially closed. There was no reference to the other Fred Meyer location in Everett, Washington at 12906 Bothell-Everett Highway south of Silver Lake that is still open. We first reported the closure of the Evergreen Way location back on August 18th. A Kroger spokesperson told us in part, “Unfortunately, due to a steady rise in theft and a challenging regulatory environment that adds significant costs, we can no longer make these stores financially viable.” In addition to the Fred Meyer at Murphy’s Corner Kroger also operates the two QFC stores in Everett at 4919 Evergreen Way and 2615 Broadway. Several small retailers surrounding the main Evergreen store remain open but a fence has gone up around the Fuel Station at the south end of the lot.
