Over the last 12 months, Everett, Washington Fire and Police crews have responded to numerous trespassing and fire complaints at a couple of abandoned homes in the 1300 block of Broadway in north Everett. This morning a man suspected of trespassing tried to escape arrest by climbing down a chimney back into the house where he was seen inside. It did not go well. At approximately 0839 hours, the Everett Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 1300 block of Broadway Avenue for a trespass complaint. Neighbors called in stating there was smoke coming from a boarded-up house that was posted with No Trespassing signs.
Officers arrived on scene and could hear a person inside the residence and confirmed smoke was coming from the chimney. The trespasser refused to come out of the building, so Officers attempted entry through the front door. While this was occurring, the trespasser climbed out of a second story window and onto the roof. Officers outside the residence told the male to give up and come down, but he ignored directions and climbed into the still smoking chimney from the top where he became stuck.
Officers called for the Everett Fire Department to come and rescue the trespasser from the chimney. Fire crews attempted to rescue the male from the top of the chimney, but he refused assistance and moved further down the chimney. The smoldering debris which had been in the fireplace had been removed. Fire crews then removed the fireplace mantel and opened the wall to extricate the male. Once he was safely removed from the chimney, the male was arrested and transported to Providence Hospital to be medically evaluated
